Mayor of London Boris Johnson puts suburban rail services takeover plan to government

Mr Johnson has submitted proposals for a takeover of train routes to the government.

He argues that under mayoral management passengers would benefit from more frequent and reliable services, simpler ticketing, cleaner and safer stations and better standards of customer service.

It would also boost the capital?s competitiveness by delivering major improvements to mainline rail services, supporting economic growth and jobs for Londoners, he says.

In addition, the Mayor states that bringing the franchises under the control of his office would save millions of pounds, which would be reinvested into further improving the network.

The Southeastern and Greater Anglia franchises are particularly in the Mayor?s sights, with potential savings of ?100m over 20 years.

Currently, with the exception of the London Overground network, rail services into the capital are provided by several private train operating companies, each with their own franchise agreement with central government.

Mr Johnson said: ?London?s rail passengers deserve far better service than the current franchises deliver and the economic benefits of properly investing in our rail infrastructure are huge.

?An efficient rail service is vital in order to remain competitive in challenging economic times, helping to usher in greater prosperity in the future, not just for the capital but for UK PLC.

?This plan gives us the opportunity to create a truly joined up suburban railway system that would vastly improve service and deliver better stations.

?A more coherent London-wide structure would bring more frequent trains, safer stations and sanity to a mind bogglingly complex fare system.?

Since Transport for London and the Mayor took over running London Overground in 2007, reliability has increased to 96 per cent and customer satisfaction is at 90 per cent.

Demand has trebled since TfL took over the network and is forecast to grow by a further 34 per cent by 2020.

~She also gave me a TON of fresh produce from the farm she interns at! Not only local and natural, but grown with love! Cucumbers, lettuce, beans, squash... Score!

~My town was absolutely gorgeous for magic hour tonight. The pink hazy sky, the perfect temperature of air that caresses your skin, the purple Jacaranda petals floating gently down and covering everything...

~I'm always talking about how much I love challenge, and I'm taking on a BIG new one with work. With more (even bigger ones) to come. I'm going to thrive!

Food was a major environmental force that shaped the human lineage ? perhaps influencing key moments such as when humans' ancestors started walking upright ? and these new findings help reveal the complex evolutionary paths these ancestors took in response to the world around them, the scientists add.

The findings are based on fossils of the extinct hominin Australopithecus sediba that were accidentally discovered in 2008 by the 9-year-old son of a scientist in the remains of a cave in South Africa. The fossils were 2 million years old.

A hominin is the lineage that includes humans and their relatives after they split from those of chimpanzees. ?Australopithecus means "southern ape" and is a group that includes the iconic fossil Lucy, while sediba means "wellspring" in the South African language Sotho. This hominin's mix of human and primitive traits has made a strong case for it being the immediate ancestor of the human lineage. [Image Gallery: Our Closest Human Ancestor]

Chimpanzees, humans' closest living relatives, prefer fruits and leaves even when grasses are abundant. By contrast, extinct species of humans and australopiths apparently preferred diets richer in grasses or grass-eating animals.

Scientists can gauge what our ancient relatives might have eaten by looking at their teeth, particularly the marks and remnants left on them by food. They also can look at the carbon isotopes making up fossils; the grasses that dominate savannas engage a kind of photosynthesis that involves both normal carbon-12 and heavier carbon-13, while trees and shrubs rely on a kind of photosynthesis that prefers carbon-12.

By analyzing two fossil specimens, researchers found that the diet of Au. sediba apparently differed substantially from those of most other extinct species of hominins studied to date.

Carbon isotopes from the remains suggest Au. sediba ate nearly completely woodland diets, comparable to forest specialists such as giraffes. In addition, tiny fragments of a diverse range of plant tissues, including bark and wood, were found in the teeth of one of the individuals.

"There is more variety in our past than we expected," said researcher Amanda Henry, a paleoanthropologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. "We're seeing more variation among the diets and behaviors of early hominins than we'd previously seen."

The findings suggest "there wasn't a single, straight line from an early, primitive hominin to us," Henry told LiveScience. "Many of our ancestors and relatives branched out, tried new things and generally worked at doing what was best in their environment at that particular time."

Henry and her colleagues are now looking for remnants of food stuck in the teeth of other extinct hominins. They detailed their findings online June 27 in the journal Nature.

Charlie Rangel Primary: New York Congressman Wins Democratic House Nomination

NEW YORK, June 26 (Reuters) - Charles Rangel, a 21-term U.S. congressman and once-towering figure in New York politics whose stature was diminished by an ethics scandal, survived a vigorous challenge on Tuesday to win the Democratic primary.
The 82-year-old Democrat, who has represented Harlem in the House of Representatives since 1971 and is a founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, was running against a crowd of younger politicians in a redrawn district that is now heavily Latino.
In a defiant victory speech in Harlem, Rangel took a swipe at those who endorsed his opponents.
"If they didn't think after 42 years that I was the best qualified, I promise them that in the next two years they'll have no question about the fact that you elected the best," Rangel said.
Rangel's opponents included state Senator Adriano Espaillat, a Dominican-American who has strong Latino support, and Clyde Williams, who worked in the White House under former President Bill Clinton and got a boost when he won endorsements from the New York Times and the New York Daily News.
In an interview earlier in the day, Williams swatted down talk that he might be angling to run in two years, after Rangel's presumed retirement.
"This is not about any time in the future. This is about right now," Williams said, adding that he was the only candidate talking about issues like unemployment, achievement gaps in education and disparities in health care.
On 125th Street, Harlem's commercial spine, many voters approached on Tuesday night - younger people in particular - said they felt it was time for a change.

"He's a legend. But he's everything that the Congress represents, which is complacency, just being too comfortable," said Salim Mhunzi, 27, a marketing strategist. He planned to vote for Williams who "knows how to maneuver with the DC crowd."
Others said they were solidly in Rangel's camp.
"He's been a staple in our community for years and years," said Thomas Berkley, a 53-year-old carpenter. "He's my guy. He's my man."
Once one of the most powerful members of Congress, Rangel now walks slowly through the halls of the Capitol with a cane.
The House censured him in 2010 for ethics violations, including failing to pay some income taxes, and he stepped down as chairman of the powerful tax-writing House Ways and Means committee. But Rangel retained his seat in the 2010 election. (Editing by Christopher Wilson and Philip Barbara)

Hi! I'm sorry, somebody already private messaged me and reserved the waterbender. Yes you can blood bend, and you don't have to do it on a full moon if you're a strong waterbender. Relationahip Status means if you're single or taken by another character. I'm sorry that it's been reserved. You can try one of the other characters who can tag along with Team Avatar.

Well, it's pretty much just like the TV Show, Avatar the Last Airbender. Except, instead of their characters you create your own. Right now a 100 Year War has started and the Avatar is the only one who can stop it. He is found, but he only knows the element of air and he has to learn the rest of the elements. Many people he meets will help him, many others will despise him. He must stay hidden and travel around the Four Nations to learn the elements along with his new friends who will help. His destiny is to defeat Fire Lord Ozai.
