According to research company Gartner, the Windows Desktop and legacy Windows software will become less important in future releases of Windows. While Microsoft doesn?t force developers to start developing for the new technology introduced in Windows 8 such as the Metro interface, Gartners expect that they will. ?Gartner also expects that until 2015 most business users will continue to use their desktop and desktop browser running applications as they currently do, but by 2020 the Metro interface should have become their first choice.

While Windows 8 is still part of the Windows family, Gartner feels that going from Windows XP/Vista/7 to Windows 8 (RT) with the Metro GUI can be compared to moving from DOS technology to Windows NT. They think it?s a technology shift, where the technology shift from DOS to Windows NT took almost 8 years and the technology shift from current Windows versions to Windows 8 might require an equal amount of time.

In an international scientific breakthrough, a Griffith University research team has been able to photograph the shadow of a single atom for the first time.

"We have reached the extreme limit of microscopy; you can not see anything smaller than an atom using visible light," Professor Dave Kielpinski of Griffith University's Centre for Quantum Dynamics in Brisbane, Australia.

"We wanted to investigate how few atoms are required to cast a shadow and we proved it takes just one," Professor Kielpinski said.

Published this week in Nature Communications, "Absorption imaging of a single atom "is the result of work over the last 5 years by the Kielpinski/Streed research team.

At the heart of this Griffith University achievement is a super high-resolution microscope, which makes the shadow dark enough to see.

No other facility in the world has the capability for such extreme optical imaging.

Holding an atom still long enough to take its photo, while remarkable in itself, is not new technology; the atom is isolated within a chamber and held in free space by electrical forces.

Professor Kielpinski and his colleagues trapped single atomic ions of the element ytterbium and exposed them to a specific frequency of light. Under this light the atom's shadow was cast onto a detector, and a digital camera was then able tocapture the image.

"By using the ultra hi-res microscope we were able to concentrate the image down to a smaller area than has been achieved before, creating a darker image which is easier to see", Professor Kielpinski said.

The precision involved in this process is almost beyond imagining.

"If we change the frequency of the light we shine on the atom by just one part in abillion, the image can no longer be seen," Professor Kielpinski said.

Research team member, Dr Erik Streed, said the implications of these findings are far reaching.

"Such experiments help confirm our understanding of atomic physics and may be useful for quantum computing," Dr Streed said.

There are also potential follow-on benefits for biomicroscopy.

"Because we are able to predict how dark a single atom should be, as in how much light it should absorb in forming a shadow, we can measure if the microscope is achieving the maximum contrast allowed by physics."

"This is important if you want to look at very small and fragile biological samples such as DNA strands where exposure to too much UV light or x-rays will harm the material.

"We can now predict how much light is needed to observe processes within cells,under optimum microscopy conditions, without crossing the threshold and destroying them."

And this may get biologists thinking about things in a different way.

"In the end, a little bit of light just might be enough to get the job done."

GLOBAL MARKETS-Shares, euro dragged lower by grim economic data,

LONDON (Reuters) - World shares, the euro and oil prices fell on Wednesday as weak data highlighted the headwinds facing the global economy, though hopes of more monetary stimulus from central banks limited the falls.

Strong demand for safe-haven German debt at a bond auction also signaled that investors remain worried over the implementation of recently agreed measures to help ease the euro zone's debt crisis, sending yields on Spanish and Italian debt higher.

Activity was subdued, however, with U.S. markets closed for the Independence Day holiday and ahead of policy decisions from the European Central Bank and Bank of England on Thursday.

In the quiet market Germany found it easy to sell 3.3 billion euros ($4.2 billion) of 5-year government bonds, receiving bids for 2.7 times the amount on offer at an average yield of just 0.52 percent.

"What we are seeing is that ... this demand for safety remains intact," said Michael Leister, rate strategist at DZ Bank.

After the auction 10-year Spanish bond yields rose 11 basis points to 6.38 percent, and the Italian equivalent rose 12 basis points to 5.76 percent.

The euro shed 0.2 percent against the dollar to hit $1.2565, but was still holding above Tuesday's low of $1.2559.

Traders said the euro was under pressure from widespread expectations that the ECB is about to cut interest rates.

The single currency fell to an 11-1/2 year low against the higher-yielding Swedish crown when Sweden's central bank kept its key interest rates unchanged.

EQUITIES SLIDE

European share markets ended three days of gains, with the FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares falling 0.3 percent to 1,042.94 points, retreating from a two-month high set on Tuesday.

European equity markets began their latest rally on Friday, having fallen sharply for much of June, after European Union leaders agreed on new measures to support the region's banks and address funding problems facing Spain at a summit meeting.

Investors have also been encouraged back into riskier asset markets by the belief that the ECB will cut rates on Thursday and that it may also inject fresh funds to help boost the region's struggling economy.

A Reuters poll of economists showed a majority of economists expect the ECB to cut its main rate 25 basis points to 0.75 percent on Thursday, while money market traders are evenly split on whether the central bank will cut the deposit rate, a separate survey showed.

"Investors will also want to see if the ECB President will highlight downside risks to growth and inflation, which will set the ground for more easing," said Paul Robson, currency strategist at RBS.

The Bank of England is expected to launch a third round of monetary stimulus at its meeting.

GLOBAL SLOWDOWN

Data releases from across the globe continue to add weight to the view that the world economy is slowing down.

An index of activity among private Chinese service sector firms showed them growing at their slowest rate in 10 months in June as new order growth cooled, though the index has posted 43 months of consistent expansion.

Another survey showed Germany's services sector unexpectedly stagnated in June, ending an eight-month period of expansion as new order intake dropped.

A composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for the whole euro area, which surveyed thousands of companies, was revised up in June, but has been below the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction for nine of the last 10 months.

"Even Germany looks to have fallen into a renewed decline, though only a very modest drop in output is signalled. The pace of downturns in other major euro member states is far more worrying," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at data provider Markit.

He said output in Italy probably declined 1 percent in the second quarter, with steep downturns also on the cards in Spain and France.

COMMODITIES STEADY

The prospect of further central bank monetary easing has supported the prices of gold and other commodities this week, but the increasingly grim news about the health of the world economy has sparked a retreat.

"We believe that the euro zone crisis, the U.S. fiscal cliff, and the possibility of a hard landing in China will give the markets plenty to worry about and will keep risk appetite low and constrained," Societe Generale said.

The bank has lowered its price outlook for Brent crude by $5 a barrel to $100.

Brent crude, which had also been gaining on rising tension over Iran's nuclear program, was 90 cents lower at $99.80 per barrel after jumping more than 3 percent on Tuesday.

Brent crude was trading as low as $88.49 on June 22.

Spot gold was little changed at $1,616.05 an ounce, after rising more than 4 percent since last Friday. It hit a two-week high of $1,624.70 on Tuesday.

The gold market is likely to remain steady ahead of the release of U.S. monthly employment data on Friday, which may encourage talk the Federal Reserve will join with its European counterparts in taking additional policy easing measures.

The U.S. monthly jobs report is expected to show 90,000 workers were added to non-farm payrolls in June and the unemployment rate held at 8.2 percent.

What's New: The ATS represents another step in Cadillac's campaign to match the performance and catch up to the sales numbers of the premium German sports sedans, in particular the long dominant BMW 3 Series. It's a compact sedan?the lightest Caddy in decades?developed on all-new architecture that's smaller than the midsize CTS. The ATS is basically rear-wheel drive, with the option of sending power to all four wheels. It comes to Cadillac showrooms in mid-August with three engine choices, two transmissions (automatic and manual, both six-speed), and a wide variety of trim and infotainment options. The softened styling is consistent with the design language established by the CTS.

The body shell is a masterpiece of designing for high chassis rigidity and simultaneous weight reduction. Materials include an alchemist's recipe of high-strength steel, aluminum, and a pinch or two of magnesium, painstakingly whittled and shaved?a gram here, a gram there?to minimize curb weights. Those weights range from just over 3300 pounds to 3629 for all-wheel drive and V-6 power, according to Cadillac. At the same time, the symphony of structural materials, spot welds, rivets, and structural adhesives yields a very stiff body shell, up to 40 percent stiffer than the midsize CTS. Chassis rigidity is the key to all vehicle dynamics, and the ATS delivers.

Tech Tidbit: Infotainment electronics keep getting more sophisticated, more graphically attractive, and more easily accessible. Cadillac CUE (for Cadillac User Experience) is the latest example. It's capable of pairing data from up to 10 Bluetooth mobile devices, USB plug-ins, SD cards, and MP3 players, with fewer buttons and larger icons.

Driving Character: Cadillac's ATS strategy was simple: Duplicate BMW 3 Series dynamics, including its eager responses, supple ride, quiet interior, and surgically precise steering. The ATS nails most of that list, particularly because of Cadillac's auto-damping magnetorheological shocks (better known as Magnetic Ride Control), part of the FE3 suspension. Body motions are well controlled, with limited roll, great balance, right-now transient response, and powerful fade-free braking. The manual transmission (turbo only) amplifies the bond between car and driver. Though there could be improvement on one particular attribute (see Driver's Grievance), the ATS generally inspires confidence, simultaneously delivering all-day comfort.

Favorite Detail: In a competitive set that prioritizes decisive responses, Cadillac's FE3 suspension package, with Magnetic Ride Control damping, limited-slip differential, and Brembo brakes, puts the ATS on an equal dynamic footing with its German rivals. This combination, with the 2.0-liter turbo and manual transmission, would not be out of place at track-day events.

Driver's Grievance: Cadillac's electric rack-and-pinion power steering varies assist, but tactile information is all but absent. The Tremec six-speed manual gearbox makes the most of the turbo's torque, but shift engagements could be more positive.

The Bottom Line: The ATS's engine trio, distinctive styling, and other highlights give it the chops to be the first truly competitive compact luxury sports sedan from the U.S. It also delivers a broad range of trim and feature choices, across a price ladder that climbs from $33,900 to $42,090. Best in class? To be determined. A contender? No question.

Thomas Kinkade's wife, girlfriend head to court

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Thomas Kinkade's widow and girlfriend are facing off in court over who will be executor of the late artist's $66.3 million estate.

Amy Pinto-Walsh, who was living with Kinkade and found his body when the 54-year-old died in April, has submitted handwritten notes she says bequeath her his mansion in Monte Sereno and $10 million to establish a museum of his paintings there.

Kinkade's wife of 30 years, Nanette Kinkade, disputes the claims by Pinto-Walsh and seeks full control of the estate. The couple had been legally separated for more than two years when Kinkade died.

The self-described "Painter of Light" was known for sentimental scenes of country gardens and pastoral landscapes. His work led to a commercial empire of franchised galleries, reproduced artwork and spin-off products that was said to fetch some $100 million a year in sales.

In recent years, however, he had run into personal difficulties, including a 2010 bankruptcy filing by one of his companies and an arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence that same year outside Carmel.

Kinkade accidentally overdosed April 6 on alcohol and Valium.

Nanette Kinkade's lawyers have requested that the probate proceedings be conducted behind closed doors, the Los Angeles Times reported (http://lat.ms/QLcHcy). A ruling on that point is pending.

Monday's hearing will determine the authenticity and legal weight of the notes, dated Nov. 18, 2011, and Dec. 11, 2011.

The first, according to a transcription furnished earlier this month by Pinto-Walsh's lawyers, reads: "I, Thomas Kinkade, being of sound mind and body do hereby bequeath to Amy Pinto Walsh $10,000,000 in cash from my corporate policy and I give her the house at 16342 Ridgecrest Avenue for her security."

The second note states that along with the house, Pinto-Walsh, 48, should be given $10 million to establish the "Thomas Kinkade Museum" at the mansion "for the public display in perpetuity of original art."

Pinto-Walsh's lawyer, Sonia Agee, will ask the court to carry out those instructions. Agee will also seek legal authority for Pinto-Walsh to oversee $66.3 million from Kinkade's estate.

Pinto-Walsh's lawyers filed court papers June 11 stating that she and Kinkade had planned to marry in Fiji as soon as his divorce went through.

Nanette Kinkade has painted Pinto-Walsh in court papers as a gold-digger who is trying to cheat the artist's rightful heirs. After Kinkade's death, she obtained a restraining order prohibiting the other woman from talking publicly about the artist. That confidentiality agreement is also the subject of court proceedings.
