4 Ways Small Business Owners Can Cut Costs

?Guest post written by Carol Wilson. To gain exposure by writing for us, read our write for us guideline.

As a business owner in a tough economy, you may be struggling to pay your bills and pay yourself. You probably know that your business is just in a slump, and it will recover. However, it can be tough to plan for good times in the future when your financial situation is so uncertain now. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to cut costs and free up more cash for your business.

Here are four money-saving techniques you can try out to improve your company?s financial standing:

1. If possible, let your employees work remotely

If the majority of the work your staff does is on computers, your employees don?t really need to be at the office. They can work from the comfort of their homes and save you money. Letting your employees work remotely means you have to pay less for smaller office space and pay less for office maintenance. When employees work from home, productivity can be an issue. However, setting daily goals for your staff will help them stay on task. An added benefit of letting your employees work remotely is that they?ll likely feel as though they have a better life/work balance, which will result in fewer absences and sub-par work that?s a result of burnout.

2. Embrace cloud computing

You can reduce your IT costs quite significantly if you use cloud software and services. Storing your data on the cloud means you won?t lose it if your computers crash. Losing data can put a definite financial strain on your business because you?ll have to pay your employees to re-collect data. Additionally, most cloud-based software is more affordable than traditional software. And using the cloud means you don?t have to pay for a dedicated server and extra IT staff to keep it up and running.

3. Ditch the paper and printers

Your company can share the bulk of its documents digitally and send faxes using an online fax service. Exchanging documents digitally means you use less paper and ink, and therefore have to purchase less of those somewhat pricey office supplies. Additionally, using an online fax service eliminates the need for a fax machine that you have to pay to maintain. Keeping all of your important documents on your company computers (or on the cloud) also means that things stay more organized and there?s no need to hire a file clerk.

4. Shop around for better insurance

You?re probably paying too much for insurance, and you?re probably paying for coverage you don?t need. Sometimes not going with well-known, bigwig insurance companies can save you a lot. So, re-examine how much you?re paying for workers? compensation, business liability insurance, and health insurance for your employees. There?s a good chance that you will be able to save some money on your insurance if you fully explore your other options. Talk to your business associates and do some research on the internet to find the best insurance deals. Why overpay to over insure your business?

As a business owner, reducing your operating costs should be one of your biggest priorities. Don?t let your business go broke because you?re paying too much for office space, office supplies, and insurance. Try out the tips above, and get your business on the right track to financial stability.

Caltech hit with NCAA sanctions

PASADENA - Another storied Southern California university has joined the USC Trojans under the hammer of NCAA sanctions.

The UCLA Bruins? Nope. Would you believe the Caltech Beavers?

The California Institute of Technology has been given a reprimand and penalties for fielding players who were academically ineligible, the NCAA announced Thursday, putting a school whose losing streaks can run into the decades in the company of athletic powerhouses like USC and Oklahoma.

Caltech allowed 30 ineligible players in 12 sports, including baseball, basketball, tennis and swimming, to practice or compete over four academic years, the NCAA said.

The problems came from the school's system of "shopping" for courses, where students attend classes for three weeks at the beginning of a term before registration. That meant that under NCAA rules, some athletes were not considered full-time students when they took the field.

The NCAA blamed a lack of oversight and communication between athletic administrators, coaches and the registrar.

Caltech athletic officials discovered and reported the problems themselves. School officials said they would have a statement on the sanctions later Thursday.

The penalties, many of them self-imposed by the university, include three years of probation, one year of no campus recruiting and the vacating of wins and records.

The Beavers, who compete in NCAA Division III, have taken

futility to new heights. The baseball team has lost 237 straight games. The water polo team last year snapped a losing streak that had lasted nine years.

But nothing can match the school's basketball team's epic losing streak for glorious failure.

The basketball Beavers went 310 conference games without a win, a 26-year streak that begin in the mid-1980s and finally ended on Feb. 22, 2011.

While basketball is among the sanctioned sports, that victory was legal and will remain on the books.

"It stands," Caltech spokeswoman Deborah Williams-Hedges said. "Thank goodness."

Romney says Obama 'naive' when it comes to Chavez

Mitt Romney slammed President Obama after he stated he didn't consider Venezuela much of a national security threat.

By Julie Pace,?Associated Press / July 11, 2012

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez speaks in Caracas, Venezuela on July 9. Mitt Romney says it is ?stunning and shocking? that President Barack Obama does not see Venezuela's leader as a national security threat to the US.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt?Romney?says President Barack Obama is "simply naive" if he thinks Venezuela's leader does not pose a threat to the United States.

Romney's?comments follow Obama's interview this week with a Miami TV station in which he was asked to assess the relationship between Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Iran.

"We're always concerned about Iran engaging in destabilizing activity around the globe," Obama told the station, WJAN America TeVe Miami. "But overall my sense is that what Mr. Chavez has done over the past several years has not had a serious national security impact on us."

Romney, seeking an edge both on national security and with Hispanic voters, said Obama's assertion was "misguided and misdirected."

"The idea that this nation, this president, doesn't pose a national security threat is simply naive and an extraordinary admission on the part of this president to be completely out of touch with what is happening in Latin America,"?Romney?said of Chavez in an interview Wednesday with Fox News.

Obama said the US remains "vigilant" about Venezuela. But he said his main concern was making sure "the Venezuelan people have a voice in their affairs and that you end up ultimately having fair and free elections, which we don't always see."

Chavez, who has been battling cancer, has close ties with Iran and has hosted Iranian leaders in Venezuela. He is seeking re-election and says he is cancer-free.

Chavez is roundly hated by many Venezuelans living in the U.S because of his crackdown on private enterprise, free speech and political opposition. The number of Venezuelans who now call the U.S. home ? many are from the country's middle and upper class ? has doubled in the past decade to 238,000, according to US Census figures.

More than half of them live in Florida, a key swing state in the Nov. 6 presidential election, and have a strong voice there despite making up less than 1 percent of Hispanics nationwide.

Any perception that Obama is failing to take Chavez seriously also could energize Florida's more conservative and politically powerful Cuban-Americans. Many of them also regard Chavez with disdain because of his close ties to former Cuban leader Fidel Castro and his financial support for the struggling Cuban government.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said Chavez is an attention-seeker and?Romney?played right into his hands.

"Hugo Chavez has become increasingly marginalized and his influence has waned," LaBolt said. "It's baffling that Mitt?Romney?is so scared of a leader like Chavez whose power is fading, while?Romney?continues to remain silent about how to confront al-Qaida or how to bring our troops home from Afghanistan."

Associated Press writer Laura Wides-Mu?oz in Miami contributed to this report.

Penn State president: 'We are committed to addressing our failings'

DUNMORE, Lackawanna County ? A day after a scathing report revealed a cover-up of child sexual abuse at Penn State, officials at the university vowed to promptly address the report's recommendations and reconsider the university's "leadership culture."

University President Rodney A. Erickson, during a board of trustees meeting at the university's Worthington campus here, said he has appointed a team of three top university officials to coordinate operational changes recommended by special investigator Louis Freeh's 267-page report.

"We are committed to addressing our failings," Erickson said.

While adding that it will take time to review the report and its recommendations, "it has become clear to me that we need to reconsider our community's leadership culture," he said.

Meanwhile, Karen Peetz, the board's chairwoman, reiterated that her board "accepts full responsibility for each of the failures that occurred in cooperation with the administration."

She said board committees at a September meeting are expected to present "action plans" after reviewing portions of Freeh's report that pertain to their function on the board. She expects the board to adopt most, if not all of the 119 recommendations in the report.

"We will take every action to ensure events like these never happen again," Peetz said.

Later, during a news conference, university officials said it's too early to say what the future holds for the statue of former football coach Joe Paterno at the university and the use of his name and likeness. Peetz, responding to a question, referred to that as a "sensitive issue," saying it would take a "lot of deliberation and discussion."

In a report released Thursday on the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal, Freeh, a former head of the FBI, said Paterno and top Penn State administrators covered up child sex-abuse allegations against Sandusky for more than a decade to protect the university.

His report also slammed the board of trustees for failing to perform its oversight duties.

University President Graham Spanier resigned in the wake of the scandal. Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz and Athletic Director Tim Curley face trial for allegedly lying to a grand jury.

Without mentioning any of the men by name, Peetz said, "It's sufficient to say that the investigation concluded that certain people at the university in a position to protect children ? failed to do so."

The Freeh team's findings could have serious consequences for the university, which faces civil lawsuits by some of Sandusky's victims, an NCAA investigation of how the Penn State football program was managed, and charges against Schultz and Curley of failing to report a crime. Erickson said he would be in contact with the NCAA in the next two weeks.

The university has been named in three civil lawsuits related to the Sandusky scandal at U.S. District Court. None of three plaintiffs were among the victims in the grand jury report on charges against Sandusky, according to trustee Ira Lubert, who said he expects additional suits to be filed.

He said former assistant coach Mike McQueary has filed court papers outlining his plans to file a whistle-blower lawsuit, adding that "we don't believe Mr. McQueary's claims have any merit."

In February 2001, McQueary saw Sandusky in a locker room shower with a boy and reported it to Paterno.

Meanwhile, the board began implementing a number of changes, which included lowering trustee term limits from 15 years to 12 years beginning next year and starting a 30-minute public comment period at meetings.

The board also appointed a new vice president and general counsel ? Stephen Dunham ? and announced that a search is under way for a new chief compliance officer.

In addition, the university will hire a new coordinator of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act and provide related training. The act was named for Jeanne Clery, a 19-year-old Lehigh University freshman who was raped and murdered in 1986 in her dorm room.

Freeh's report noted that top officials, including Paterno, were obligated under the Clery Act to report the shower incident to the university police department.
