1-cup flour,
1-teaspoon baking powder

APPLE SLICE PANCAKES

1 Granny Smith apple
1 1/4 cup any type pancake mix
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg
2 teaspoons canola oil
1 cup low-fat milk

Lightly coat a griddle or skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium heat.
Peel, core and thinly slice apple into rings.

In a large mixing bowl, combine ingredients for pancake batter. Stir until ingredients are evenly moist. (Small lumps are ok! Over-mixing makes pancakes tough.)
For each pancake, place apple ring on griddle and pour about 1/4 cup batter over apple ring, starting in the center and covering the apple.

?Cook until bubbles appear. Turn and cook other side until lightly brown.

Grandma?s Beef-Stew & Dumplings
1 pound??????(500 g)???????stew beef
3 tablespoons(45 ml)???????flour
1 clove of garlic
salt and pepper to taste
1 medium size onion, chopped
3 carrots
1 turnip, diced
1 bay leaf
Cut meat into cubes.? Roll in flour and brown in hot oil.
Add chopped onion and garlic.? Add salt and pepper to taste.
Stir until onion is a golden brown.? Add enough water to cover
the meat.? Bring to a boil.? Simmer gently for 1 ? -2 hours.
Add rest of vegetables ? hour before stew is served.

YIELD: serves 4-6
TIME: 15 minutes preparation, approx.2 hours to cook

Dumplings
2 cups????????????..(500 ml)?????????all purpose flour
4 teaspoons????????.(20 ml)???????????baking powder
? teaspoon??????????(2,5 ml)?????????.salt
2 tablespoons???????(30 ml)???????????shortening
? cup??????????????.(185 ml)???????milk
Sift flour.? Add baking powder and salt and sift again.
Cut in the shortening and add milk.? Drop into simmering stew
gently, being careful to drop a piece of meat or vegetable so
that it will not be immersed.? Cover the kettle.

Picnic Chicken Salad
2 1/2 cups cooked, diced chicken breast
1/2 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 Tablespoons pickle relish
1/2 cup light mayonnaise

Combine all ingredients.
Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Use within 1-2 days. Chicken salad does not freeze well.
How to use:
Make chicken salad sandwiches.
Make a pasta salad by mixing with 2 cups cooked pasta.

2/3-cup sugar
2-tablespoons cornstarch
a few grains of salt
1-tablespoon lemon juice
6 large medium baked tart shells
(You can double medium baked tart shells)

Crush ? cup blueberries, add water and bring to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and press through sieve.? In a saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch and salt.? Add sieved juice (made to ? cup with water).? Mix thoroughly and cook, stirring constantly until glaze thickens and becomes clear, about 5 minutes.? Cool slightly, then add lemon juice.? Arrange whole berries in tart shells and spoon glaze over berries.? Chill before serving.

Crabs, lobsters and other shellfish must be kept alive until cooked. Store in a bushel or laundry basket under wet burlap. Crabs and lobsters are best eaten the day they are caught. Live oysters can keep 7-10 days.? Mussels and clams, 4-5 days.

Caution: Be aware of the potential dangers of eating raw shellfish. This is especially true for persons with liver disorders or weakened immune systems. Warning, no one should eat raw shellfish.

If you go to the beach take along only the food that can be eaten to avoid having leftovers. If grilling, make sure local ordinances allow it.? Bring the cooler! Partially bury it in the sand, cover with blankets, and shade with a beach umbrella.

India anti-graft activist to end fast after government (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? A self-styled Gandhian activist whose campaign against corruption sparked some of India's biggest anti-government protests in decades will end a 13-day hunger strike Sunday after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh caved in to his demands.

The 74-year-old Anna Hazare has tapped a groundswell of public anger against endemic corruption, uniting the country's bulging middle-class against a hapless political class and underlining voter anger at Singh and the ruling Congress party.

India's parliament Saturday backed landmark anti-corruption legislation, meeting Hazare's key demands. Tens of thousands of mostly urban and wired voters across India will claim victory in an unprecedented movement that may usher in a new force in Indian politics and hit the ruling Congress party hard in crucial state elections next year.

"I feel this is the country's victory... Tomorrow at 10 am I want to publicly break my fast," Hazare told over tens of thousands of cheering supporters Saturday evening at a protest site in New Delhi that has become the epicenter of a nationwide crusade.

"Only half of the battle has been won, there is still some of it left," a weak-looking Hazare told the crowd.

Hazare and his team of social activist aides led a rousing rendition of the Indian national anthem as supporters waved national flags and celebrated almost a fortnight of protest.

The veteran activist, whose health had seriously deteriorated as his weight fell, made the announcement after a specially-convened session of parliament ended with lawmakers backing a resolution by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to push for a law to create an independent ombudsman with wide-ranging power to investigate lawmakers, the judiciary and bureaucrats.

Undermined by graft scandals and seen as out-of-touch with voters battling high inflation, Congress' failure to deal with Hazare's campaign before it became a national issue spells danger for the ruling party in state polls next year ahead of the 2014 general election.

While protests in India are not uncommon, the sight of many well-off young professionals using Twitter and Facebook taking to the streets of Asia' third-largest economy suggest an awakening of a previously politically-ambivalent middle-class.

PARLIAMENT RESOLUTION

Mukherjee Saturday said parliament agreed to demands from Hazare to bring civil servants under the proposed agency's authority alongside parliament and the judiciary, ensure similar agencies at a state level and create a citizen's charter.

"We are at a crossroads, let us try to find a solution within the constitutional framework without violating the supremacy of Parliament," Mukherjee told the lower house.

Support for Mukherjee's resolution came after a grueling day of fractious debate in both chambers that highlighted just how much Hazare's campaign and the public support for it had rocked India's political establishment.

Hazare's trademark white cap has been sported by thousands of protesters across the country, and the slogan "I am Anna" has become a rallying cry for a generation of young people disillusioned by their graft-stained politicians.

Hazare is not some out-of-the-blue phenomenon, however. Deep-seated change has been underway for years in India as its once-statist economy globalizes, bolstered by a widely used freedom of information act, aggressive private media and the election of state politicians who have rejected traditional caste-support bases to win on governance issues.

After a botched arrest as part of a hardline approach to Hazare, a government U-turn saw ministers praise the activist, suggesting a leadership deficit in Congress without party head Sonia Gandhi, who is recovering after surgery for an undisclosed condition.

Congress pledged a slew of economic reforms after winning re-election in 2009 that would have made foreign investment easier and tax collection more effective. But graft and anger over inflation has stymied attempts to debate the legislation.

Transparency International rates India in 87th place on the most corrupt countries, according to a 2010 survey.

Several scandals linked to the government, including a bribery scam involving the granting of telecom licenses that led to the arrest of a telecoms minister and may have cost the state up to $39 billion in lost revenues, led to Hazare's latest protest.

Congress has staked a large amount of political capital on victory in next year's state election in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, where a disappointing result would ring serious alarm bells for the federal ballot in 2014.

Hazare became the unlikely thorn in the side of the government when he went on hunger strike in April. He called off that fast after the government promised to introduce a bill creating an anti-corruption ombudsman.

The so-called Lokpal legislation was presented in early August, but activists slammed the draft version as toothless because the prime minister and judges were exempt from probes.

NC counties tell thousands to leave as Irene looms (AP)

BUXTON, N.C. ? Thousands were fleeing an exposed strip of coastal villages and beaches off North Carolina on Thursday as Irene approached, threatening to become the first major hurricane to hit the East Coast in seven years.

Hours after a hurricane watch was issued for much of the state's coast, emergency officials expanded evacuation orders to include more than 200,000 tourists and locals in three coastal counties. The areas include the barrier island chain known as the Outer Banks, which is expected to take the brunt of Irene's first hit over the weekend.

The governors of North Carolina, Virginia and New Jersey made emergency declarations to free up resources, while the Navy began moving dozens of ships in Irene's path out to sea. And emergency officials all the way to New England were urging residents in low-lying areas to gather supplies and learn the way to a safe location.

The storm is expected to come ashore Saturday in North Carolina with winds of around 115 mph (185 kph). Forecasters predict it will then chug up the East Coast, dumping rain from Virginia to New York City before a much-weakened form trudges through New England.

As the sun rose over North Carolina's barrier islands, tourists loaded suitcases in their cars, while locals stocked up on food, water and gas. Traffic was moving briskly Thursday morning on the two-lane highway that cuts through many of the coastal communities, but many feared that would change.

"It's going to be a mess," said 66-year-old Buxton resident Leon Reasor as he stood inside a local bait shop. "Anyone who tells you they're not worried is a liar."

Three counties along North Carolina's coast ? Dare, Hyde and Currituck ? ordered tourists to leave. Dare and Hyde also told permanent residents to move inland.

"It wouldn't behoove anyone to stay in these circumstances," Dare County emergency management spokeswoman Sharon Sullivan said. "Businesses are boarding up. Nobody can guarantee their safety."

The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said residents in the hurricane's path should pay attention to local broadcasters for instructions from local officials. Among the most important tasks, he said, was for evacuees to figure out a safe place to go before hitting the road.

"When you evacuate, you want to know where you're going and make sure you have somewhere to go, not just get on the road with everybody else and hope you find some place," FEMA administrator Craig Fugate said Thursday on CBS's "The Early Show."

All along the East Coast, officials were calculating what they needed to do as Irene continued its march across the Caribbean toward the U.S. The Navy ordered 64 ships to leave Norfolk and other Virginia ports, saying they can better weather the storm at sea.

The hurricane is also forcing cruise lines to alter the routes of their ships and ports to consider doing the same for cargo ships that move up the busy Atlantic corridor.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged residents living in low-lying areas on Thursday to line up a place to stay on high ground ahead of possible evacuations. He said he would make a decision by late Friday on whether to evacuate neighborhoods along the water in several boroughs.

New York City's subway stations and tunnels would likely be flooded in places, and officials plan to shut the system down ahead of time to reduce damage to the infrastructure.

Even without hurricane-force winds, northeastern states already drenched from a rainy August could see flooding and fallen trees from Irene.

"You want to go into a hurricane threat with dry soil, low rivers, a half moon," New Jersey state climatologist David Robinson said.

That is not the case. The Garden State has gotten twice as much rain this month as in a normal August, and high tide happens at 8 a.m. EDT on Sunday, when Irene might be passing by.

Early Thursday, the storm was pounding the Bahamas with widespread damage reported on at least two southern islands. It was a powerful Category 3 hurricane with winds at 115 mph (185 kph). An afternoon hurricane center advisory said some strengthening was expected, but forecasters didn't expect the storm to reach Category 4 strength.

While the storm's path isn't definite, officials are taking nothing for granted.

In Maryland, inspections of bridges looking for cracks in the support piers and other structural features found no damage, according to state transportation agency spokeswoman Teri Moss. In Virginia, with a southeastern corner that could be in Irene's way, cities along the coast are reviewing their evacuation plans, said Laura Southard, spokeswoman for the state Department of Emergency Management.

Farther north, included marinas in Connecticut pulled in their boats and Rhode Island emergency management officials handed out sandbags.

Roads and bridges in Massachusetts are likely to bear the weather in good condition, said Peter Judge, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. But the agency is planning for flooding and is keeping an eye on the 3,000 public and private dams throughout the state.

North Carolina's Outer Banks have a long history of hurricanes, and building codes and emergency plans reflect that. Structures in the region are designed to withstand up to 110 mph sustained winds and gusts of up to 130 mph for three minutes. Evacuation routes are meticulously planned, down to the order in which counties hit the road.

Some of the region's most popular destinations rely on the ailing Bonner Bridge, which was built in 1963 and intended to last 30 years, to connect Hatteras Island to the northern Outer Banks. There's no other way to reach Hatteras except by boat.

The bridge handles about 2 million cars a year and the state DOT ranks it a 2 on its safety meter, with 100 being the highest, or most safe, designation.

"We're going to shift people and resources around to do what we need to do and keep the roads open," said North Carolina Department of Transportation spokeswoman Nicole Meister. The 2.7-mile bridge won't stay open if it's deemed unsafe ? which happened during Hurricane Earl last year ? but the state has an emergency ferry terminal ready in that case to get people off the island, Meister said.

Tourists in Buxton were sad to cut their vacations short, but said they understood the urgency of the situation.

New Jersey accountant John Robeson brought his wife and children ? ages 8 and 4 ? down for a week, but their vacation was cut short after three days.

"I'm disappointed," he said as he loaded his car. "You wait all year. Talk about it. Make plans for your vacation. And now this. It's a bad break."

His wife, Marlene, agreed. "I'm worried about traffic. I don't want to be stuck on the highway when the storm hits," she said.

Japan PM on way out, leadership race wide open (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Unpopular Prime Minister Naoto Kan confirmed on Tuesday he would step down as head of the ruling party this week if two key bills were enacted, clearing the way for a new leader to try to cope with Japan's nuclear crisis and slew of economic ills.

The race to become Japan's sixth leader in five years was blown wide open on Monday when former foreign minister Seiji Maehara, 49, decided to run.

That cut the chances of Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda, a fiscal conservative. The support base for the two men overlaps in the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) -- and whoever is elected next week as leader of the party with control of the lower house will become prime minister.

"...on Friday if the two pending bills pass parliament by then, I will resign as head of the DPJ," Kan told a parliamentary panel. "Then, when the new leader is chosen, I will quit as prime minister."

Japan's new leader must grapple with a soaring yen that threatens exports, rebuild from the March earthquake and tsunami, end a nuclear crisis at the crippled Fukushima plant and forge a new energy policy -- all while trying to curb public debt and cure the ills of a fast-aging society.

But concerns run deep as to whether the next prime minister will fare any better than his predecessors in the face of a divided parliament and ruling party split by policies and personal feuds.

"The chances of a stable government capable of doing the bold and decisive things needed to deal with the problems in Tohoku (northeast Japan) and revitalize Japan are very, very low," said Columbia University professor Gerry Curtis. He suggested the next government could also be short-lived.

Kan, whose voter support has sunk below 20 percent, pledged in June to step down after achieving certain tasks. With key bills expected to pass this week, the DPJ is set to pick a successor on August 29. One of those bills, to promote renewable energy sources such as solar power, was approved by a lower house panel on Tuesday.

VETERAN KANO FOR CONSENSUS?

Maehara is a security expert who has irritated China by warning about its growing military might and has lately put beating deflation at the top of his policy list. Japanese media said he would announce his candidacy later on Tuesday.

"We need to stand beside the disaster victims and overcome this national catastrophe together," Maehara told a group of party backers. "I think many people are disappointed by the current state of politics ... We need to regain faith in politics. Allow me to stand at the lead to build a new Japan."

At least five other lawmakers are considering a run at the nation's top job, including farm minister Michihiko Kano, 69.

An 11-term veteran, his policies are vague but he could win backing from those keen for an experienced hand at the helm.

The farm minister could also be well-placed to win support from scandal-tainted party powerbroker Ichiro Ozawa and his ally, Yukio Hatoyama, the man Kan replaced as prime minister. The two head two of the biggest intra-party groups.

"What is being sought now is experience and know-how," Kano supporter Tenzo Okumura told Reuters this week.

Noda, 54, had hoped to win the backing of Maehara -- the most popular potential candidate among voters -- in his push to replace Kan. The prime minister has come under fire for his response to the triple March disasters despite public backing for his vision of a future free of dependence on nuclear power.

How to win cooperation from opposition parties, which control the upper house and can block bills, will be one focus of the party race. Another is whether and when to raise taxes to pay for rebuilding the northeast and to fund bulging social security costs.

Noda told reporters he remained in the race, but declined further comment on the challenge by Maehara.

"I will focus on fulfilling my duties as finance minister and dealing with key bills as well as the yen's rise," he said.

Wyoming museum tells story of Japanese-American internment (Reuters)

RALSTON, Wyo (Reuters) ? It was a bittersweet return for more than 250 Japanese-American former detainees at Wyoming's Heart Mountain Relocation Center who gathered there for the opening of a museum about their wartime internment.

A replica guard tower stands over the museum on a remote wind-swept plain where nearly 14,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned in one of 10 such camps set up across the West after the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Backers of the $5.5 million, 11,000-square-foot museum next to the crumbling camp say they hope it will tell the story of those once forcibly relocated there and remind visitors of the enduring civil rights lessons from that era.

"It's something like a dream come true," said Jack Kunitomi, 95, who was imprisoned in the camp with his family and who had a son born at Heart Mountain, about 65 miles east of Yellowstone National Park.

Scant is left of the actual camp except a walking path and the remains of a hospital building, including a tall chimney. Inside the museum, visitors can see a replica of the camp barracks, where internees were warmed by pot-bellied stoves and relied on a lone fixture for light.

The story of the camps and the more than 110,000 people confined in them, the result of wartime racial profiling, is a sometimes little-known chapter in U.S. history.

An executive order signed by then-President Franklin Roosevelt authorized "exclusion zones" on the West Coast, but it was those of Japanese ancestry, not Germans or Italians, who were relocated.

Like thousands of other men in the camps, Kunitomi joined the military after restrictions on drafting Japanese-Americans were relaxed, serving as a translator in the Pacific.

More than 800 Heart Mountain internees later served in the U.S. Army in a segregated unit, the highly decorated 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The camp was also home to an organized group of "resisters of conscience" who demanded recognition of their constitutional rights before agreeing to serve.

"They resisted the draft, and I don't blame them," said Hawaii Democratic Senator Daniel K. Inouye, keynote speaker at the dedication on Saturday.

"It took a lot of guts to come out and do something that the majority did not agree with," said Inouye, 86, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in combat during a 1944 assault on German fortifications in Italy.

CHILDREN DURING WAR

Many of the former internees who returned to Heart Mountain on Saturday were young children during the war, including Kimiyo Nishimura, 80, who was 11 when she arrived at the camp.

"I remember there were knotholes in the wood, and the walls didn't reach the ceiling, so you could hear everything in the other rooms," she recalled of the spartan barracks. "It was so awful, especially for the older people.

Former Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta, 79, was about the same age as Nishimura when he was sent to Heart Mountain.

Mineta, who served for 20 years in the U.S. House representing the San Jose, California, area, recalled a local Boy Scout gathering inside the camp where he met a young boy named Alan Simpson, from nearby Cody, Wyo.

The two shared a tent and took part in knot-tying and woodworking contests, and would later serve together in Congress. Simpson, a three-term Wyoming senator who retired in 1997 still lives in Cody, and has worked with Mineta to raise funds for the museum, the only private facility of its kind.

"What happened in the past remains in the past," Mineta said. But he said the museum would serve an important reminder that "history always has the ability to repeat itself."

Mineta recounted a September 13, 2001, cabinet meeting when he served as Transportation Secretary in the George W. Bush administration.

He had grounded all commercial flights in the wake of the militant attacks two days earlier, and told Bush he was worried about suggestions by some that Muslims or Arabs should be banned from flying when the nation's airports reopened.

Mineta said Bush shared his concern, and cited Mineta's internment as an example of the wrong approach to security.

Simpson and Mineta co-sponsored the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, which apologized for the "grave injustice" of the internment camps and provided a token payment of $20,000 to former internees.

"Very few nations are strong enough to admit they're wrong. America is strong enough, and we did so," said Inouye, who also backed the act.

Hurricane Irene forces Caribbean cruise ships to divert

?(Updated August 23, 7:40 a.m. EDT) Hurricane Irene, the ninth named storm and first hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic season, is steadily increasing in strength as it swirls toward the southeastern Bahamas. Weather conditions have forced Carnival and Royal Caribbean to alter itineraries for nearly a dozen cruise ships.

According to the National Hurricane Center's 5 a.m. EDT advisory, Irene is some 105 miles southeast of the popular cruise port of Grand Turk. Maximum sustained winds are now 100 mph, and the storm is expected to intensify into a major hurricane with winds in excess of 125 mph as it chugs toward the Bahamas.

Cruise Ship Itinerary Changes

Carnival Cruise Lines
Carnival Pride, which left Baltimore on Sunday for a week-long Bahamas and Florida cruise, will sail a revised route. The ship will now visit Port Canaveral (Tuesday, instead of Wednesday) and Freeport (Wednesday), after which the line will determine the remainder of the itinerary based on Irene's projected path.

Carnival Triumph, which sailed from New Orleans on Saturday for a week-long Bahamas and Florida cruise, is swapping its Bahamas calls for visits to Western Caribbean ports. The new route includes stops in Key West (Tuesday, as planned), Cozumel (Wednesday) and Progreso (Thursday).

Carnival Destiny, which departed Miami on Monday for a five-night cruise to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay and Nassau, will instead visit Key West (Tuesday), Cozumel (Wednesday) and Costa Maya (Thursday).

Carnival Conquest, which left Galveston on Sunday for a week-long Bahamas and Florida cruise, will now sail a Western Caribbean itinerary. The new route calls for visits to Costa Maya (Wednesday), Cozumel (Thursday) and Progreso (Friday).

Carnival Victory had to cancel Monday's call at St. Thomas and is proceeding to Barbados for its scheduled call on Wednesday. Spokesman Vance Gulliksen said the line is still evaluating the remainder of the itinerary. Victory is on a seven-night cruise from San Juan.

Carnival Liberty, in the midst of a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Miami, is stopping at Grand Turk Monday instead of spending the day at sea as originally planned. The line is evaluating the remainder of the itinerary.

Carnival Miracle, which embarked from New York Thursday on an eight-night Eastern Caribbean cruise, is sailing an altered itinerary. Instead of visiting San Juan, St. Thomas and Grand Turk, the ship is now calling on Grand Turk (Monday) and Half Moon Cay (Tuesday).

Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean has reversed the itinerary for Oasis of the Seas, which left Fort Lauderdale on Saturday for a week-long Western Caribbean cruise. The ship is now visiting Cozumel on Monday; spending Tuesday at sea; calling on Falmouth, Jamaica on Wednesday; and visiting Labadee, the line's private peninsula in Haiti, on Thursday. Oasis will spend Friday at sea before returning to Fort Lauderdale on Saturday as scheduled.

Freedom of the Seas, which left Sunday from Port Canaveral on a week-long Western Caribbean cruise, is sailing a reversed itinerary. The ship is now calling on Cozumel (Tuesday), Grand Cayman (Wednesday), Falmouth, Jamaica (Thursday) and Labadee (Friday).

Oasis' sister ship, Allure of the Seas, is visiting all the ports originally scheduled on its week-long Caribbean cruise, but in a slightly different order. The ship will visit Nassau, Bahamas on Saturday (August 27) instead of Monday (August 22). Visits to St. Thomas (Wednesday) and St. Maarten (Thursday) will take place as planned.

Royal Caribbean has scrambled the order for Serenade of the Seas' seven-night Southern Caribbean cruise, which left from San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sunday. The ship is now visiting Aruba (Tuesday), Curacao (Wednesday), St. Kitts (Friday) and St. Thomas (Saturday).

Weather Outlook: Possible Affected Ships and Ports

The core of the storm will be passing just north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti early Tuesday before reaching Turks and Caicos Tuesday night and the Bahamas early Wednesday. A hurricane warning remains in effect for the Turks and Caicos, the southeastern and central Bahamas and the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

The current forecast shows the center of Irene making landfall Saturday afternoon somewhere near the South Carolina and North Carolina border. This is, however, an early projection. Meteorologists expect the storm's effects to be widespread along the East Coast.

NEW YORK (AP) ? If the creators of "Glee" are looking for new faces to bring into the fold then they've found it with "The Glee Project."

Nineteen-year-old Samuel Larsen from Los Angeles and 18-year-old Damian McGinty of Derry City, Ireland, both won the inaugural season of the talent competition show where they each get a seven-episode arc on "Glee."

Larsen, a rocker with dreadlocks, was described as having a "cool, indy, rock spirit" that has been missing from the hit Fox show

The judges believed McGinty, however, was the most likable and most improved.

The show put 12 contestants through a "Glee" bootcamp where they were critiqued on their singing, dancing and acting throughout the 10-week series.

The other finalists, Lindsay Pearce, 20, and Alex Newell, 18, didn't go home losers. The show's co-creator Ryan Murphy was so impressed he decided to write them into two episodes of the show.

"Glee" returns for its new season in September.

1. Houston?s offense absolutely steamrolled New Orleans? vanilla-looking group. (The two teams play again in Week Three.) ?Arian Foster and Ben Tate look plenty healthy running the ball.

2. The Saints lost free agent pickup Aubrayo Franklin to a sprained MCL.

3. The play of Saints undrafted rookie receiver Joe Morgan is becoming hard to ignore.

4. Mario Williams showed improvement in his second game at outside linebacker.

49ers 17, Raiders 3

1. Alex Smith moved the ball better this time around with some long drives, but the 49ers starters only scored three points. ?Rookie backup Colin Kaepernick looked solid as well, but Smith looks locked into the starting job.

2. Jason Campbell left the game early and was tested for a concussion after. ?Oakland?s offense has struggled in all facets in two preseason games.

3. 49ers rookie Kendall Hunter hasn?t overly impressed in camp, but?he was dynamic last night. The kid has rare speed and terrific moves in the open field. If Hunter can pass protect, he should get a lot of run behind Frank Gore.

4. Braylon Edwards made a big impact with a beautiful long catch. With Michael Crabtree hurt, Edwards was a key pickup.

Rams 17, Titans 16

1. Except for a 83-yard score to Brandon Gibson on a blown coverage early, Sam Bradford and the Rams starting offese struggled. ?It was 16-7 Titans at halftime.

2. Matt Hasselbeck left the game early, but it wasn?t a serious injury. ?Jake Locker once again looked promising in relief, but not so promising that he should be starting. Locker was inaccurate on a number of throws.

It?s been a nice preseason overall for both Titans quarterbacks.

3. No one really stepped up in the Rams receiver battle. Gibson looks like the No. 1 guy at the moment and it?s unclear after that.

Broncos 24, Bills 10

1. Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn both?looked sharp for the Broncos. Tim Tebow barely played.

2. Willis McGahee looks a little revived in Denver. The Broncos have been effective running in both preseason games, with McGahee back to his role as touchdown vulture.

3. Buffalo?s offensive line was overmatched, especially left tackle Demetrius Bell.

4. Really, there wasn?t a lot of positives for the Bills. ?C.J. Spiller didn?t show he was worthy of starting. Running back Johnny White and wide receiver Donald Jones both left after taking nasty hits.

Vikings 20, Seahawks 7

1. Tarvaris Jackson didn?t look great, but Seattle?s offensive line was the real problem Saturday night.

2. Seahawks fans (and Lawyer Milloy) are straining to see Charlie Whitehurst as the answer. ?His YPA is under 5.5 in two outings. ?This preseason hasn?t told us much.

3. Minnesota?s short passing game was pretty effective under Donovan McNabb. ?Rookie Christian Ponder looked like a rookie again. We?re not sure if he?s much ahead of Joe Webb at this point, if at all.
