Atlantic City casinos have long fostered the idea that laughter is the best medicine, and the best bang for the buck, all year long.
Years ago Atlantic City was regarded as a sort of proving ground for entertainment genres like jazz music and live theater, with those garnering raves reviews in the resort town often getting their cracks on the bigger stages of New York City. ?
Where stand-up comedy applies, NYC venues like the Gotham Comedy Club, Carolines on Broadway, Dangerfield?s and the Laugh Factory are still the standards by which stand-ups gauge their status on the rungs of the comedy ladder.
But A.C. takes backstage to no one in terms of the top-shelf comedy talent it now brings in, and not just during the peak tourist season but all year long.

A.C. also has a couple of venues that have been, and continue to be, the lighted stages for those still on their way up the comedy ladder, both of which will be celebrating milestone birthdays this year.
Bob Kephart?s Comedy Stop at the Tropicana turns 30 and is currently the longest-running entertainment venue in the resort, and the Borgata Comedy Club turns 10 in August. Like the Comedy Stop, the Borgata Comedy Club also hosts daily stand-up routines unless its showroom, the Music Box, is booked for headline acts. ?
Lately Revel has gotten into the mainstream comedy act, and if its initial couple of Thursday night shows at The Social (Comedy Social) are any indication, the weekly series is likely to be a third purveyor of wisecracks for a while. The series kicked off April 4 with headliner Alonzo Bodden (grand prize winner of the season three reality TV series Last Comic Standing), and last Thursday, April 11, veteran funnyman Nick DiPaolo cracked up a packed house at The Social (watch video). The series continues with Dan Soder (April 18) and Rachel Feinstein (April 25), and is booked all five Thursdays in May, each with two regional acts opening for a headliner (see schedule at acweekly.com). ?

Throughout his 53 years Garvey was at times a heavyweight Golden Gloves semifinalist, a cop and PAL organizer, a nightclub owner in his hometown of Brooklyn, a garbage man, bouncer and part-time character actor with bit parts in 13 Woody Allen films, among others.
