How many credit cards? : Personal Finance

In YNAB your Credit Card purchases are budgeted for before you make them. The spending on the CC is categorized to the specific budget categories. Since all the money you budgeted in those categories was money you actually have... it is sitting in the bank account before you spend it from the CC and it will stay there earmarked for that spending - so you won't spend it on something else. When the bill comes you transfer those earmarked dollars from the checking account to the CC and it nets out to zero.

Simple example.
Earn $100. It comes in as income available to budget and is sitting in your checking account.
Go out to eat, spend $100 using your CC. You now have a balance owing on your CC for $100
The CC bill comes in for $100. You transfer the $100 from checking to the CC. You now have 0 in checking and 0 on the CC.

In the budget screen you would see the 100 Budgeted to eating out and a 100 outflow. Category balance is 0.
If you use your category balances to control spending (and you should) Your budget would tell you that you have no more money to spend.
