Staten Island's 2013 arts grants to underwrite new visions and grand ...

STATEN ISLAND, NY ? New documentary projects of all types ? plays and films, paintings and photographs ? have won 2013 grants from the Council on the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island (COAHSI).

These awards will help underwrite as a Harbor Lights Theater show starring Island-based, Tony Award-winning actress Ann Duquesnay and multimedia artist Suzanne Lettieri's "The Fifth Borough," a visionary re-imagining of the borough

The awards will be presented during "Afternoon of Staten Island Artists," Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. in the College of Staten Island's Center for the Arts, 2800 Victory Blvd., Willowbrook.

Musician and actor Wilder Seltzer is hosting the afternoon, which will include short performances and a meet-and-greet. For more information, contact COAHSI at 718-447-3329.

THE PREMIER GRANTS
Premier Grants, available to applicants who lack access to other sources of public funding, are being awarded to 16 applicants. Among them are Ranga Tharanga, $1,000 for a celebration of Sri Lankan culture in the form of traditional dances and music on Staten Island, home to a large Sri Lankan community and the Ranga Tharanga is expected to draw some 150 young adults from the metropolitan area and New England.

Also, photographer Gail Middleton, $1,450 for "Breaking Bread," photographs of the borough's ethnic markets; Geoffrey Celis $2,000 for "Some Guys Are Bigger Than Others," a film about a would-be boxer; musician Gary Moore $1,000 for "The Big Acoustic Stomp," a music festival in Tappen Park; Helene Montagna, $3,000 for "Don't Hang Up, An Original Play" that takes place on a suicide hotline; Janise LaBoard $3,000 for "The Summer Adventures of Landin Henry," a children's book series about Sandy Ground, and Laura Bolle, $3,000 for Art for Animals ," 12 paintings about animal rights.

Also, Maggie Rose, $3,000 for "Studio Mates: the Spirit of Snug Harbor Sailors" a series of paintings; Teacher/choreographer Maiysha Mondesi, $3,000 for Communities Connect, a dance program is city housing projects; photographer Melissa Cacciola, $3,000 for "War and Peace" a tintype portraiture series of servicepeople, soldiers and veterans; Photographer Michael McWeeney, $3,000 for a film, A John Noble Centennial Profile.

Also, Rachel Caccese $3,000 for a film "Urban Farmers," an outer-borough documentary; Riverside Opera Company, $3,000 for "A 200th Anniversary Tribute to the Life of Giuseppe Verdi;" The Staten Island Playwrights Collective, $3, 000 for Kaleidoscope: Scenes from a Colorful Life;" Steven Wakeman, $3,000 for "Spinning Gold: Profiles (photographs and interviews) of the LGBT Elder Community on Staten Island;" Suzanne Lettieri, $2,050 for "The Fifth Borough," an exhibition that establishes "a mythical reimagining."

ART FUND GRANTS
In another category, Art Fund Grants, awarded by the city Department of Cultural Affairs Art Fund Grants will go to artist Brendan Coyle, $1333 for a novel "Mustard Man; actress/playwright Christine Dixon, $4,333 for "Harriet Tubman Herself; artist/curator Florence Poulain, $4,333 for performances in her Deep Tanks Gallery, Tompkinsville; Irma Bohorquez-Geisler, $3,000 for El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Staten Island; Janice Patrignani-Munoz, $4,731 for "Silk Sensations: Kaleidoscope of Color;" Jay Weichun, $1,333 for "Growing Food on Staten Island," a video documentary series about gardeners; Jennifer Lytton, $4,333 for " St. George Day Festival;" Barbara Wesby, $1333" for "Antiphon and Six Psalms," a new piece for the ensemble Voyces; Dawn Daniels, $2,833 for "Voice of the Storyteller," a concert;

ARTS ENCORE GRANTS
New York State Council on the Arts Encore Grants (designated for past awardees) will go to artists Denise Mumm and Bruce Cohn $1,597 for "Abrazo Argentina: Embracing a Culture" a show of photographs and prints; Raja Rajeswari $2,596 for Navarasam: The Expressive Journey," a dance about the Ramayana; Richmond Choral Society (Louise Cottone), $4,097 for "Devine Light" Spring Concert 2013; Seaview Playwrights Theatre (Michael Correale) $3,596 for " Angels In America;" Staten Island Philharmonic (Carolyn Clark), $5,000 for "La Boheme in Concert;" Staten Island OutLOUD (Beth Gorrie), $5,000 for 50+ community literary events;

Also, Sundog Theatre (Susan Fenley), $1,597 for a play "Stand up: Against Bullying;" Harbor Lights Theatre Company (Tamara Jenkins), $3,597 for "It Ain't Nothin' But The Blues," the TONY and Drama Desk award winning (1999) musical revue, and The Mighty String Demons (Sanchie Bobrow), $1,000 for "Imagine an Elephant" and "Come Dance With Us, a new show," new works.

ORIGINAL WORK GRANTS
NYSCA Original Work Grants will be awarded to Florence Poulain, $2,500 for "Transcending Personal Identity" a movement based project art the Staten Island LGBT Center; Marguerite Maria Rivas, $2,500 for" Recovering Staten Island Women's Literary History: Two Voices from the Gaps," Bill Murphy, $2,500 for St - The Ballad of Staten Island; Drawings, Paintings, Prints, 1971 -2013, and Steven Lapcevic, $2,500 for "VIRUS," a video installation
