Eco Friendly Home Improvement Resolutions for the New Year | Our ...

With the holidays just around the corner, that means that the New Year is not that far off either. And what is one of the traditions that comes with January 1: Setting resolutions, right?

If you?re looking for some home improvements that you can make, why not go with some that will not simply upgrade your home, but will also better the environment and save you a few dollars on your utility bills? If you need a few ideas, we have some great ones right here:

Upgrade your kitchen. The one place in the house where people tend to spend the most quality time with their family would probably be the kitchen (being that it?s where so many meals are had). There are several things that you can do to your kitchen to make it more ?green?. Swap out your current appliances for some with the Energy Star label. Put a water filter on your faucet (so that you won?t have to purchase any more bottled water). Consider using sheer fabric for your windows so that you can access more natural light instead of artificial lighting. Also, if you really want to make a change, consider installing some recycled glass countertops in exchange for the granite ones that may already be used for your countertops. Another thing that you might want to consider is purchasing a tankless water heater. It cuts water heating costs by as much as 50 percent.

Upgrade your bathroom. When it comes to making improvements to the bathroom, you have a myriad of options. You can put some down some tiles that are made from recycled materials or if you would like a soft wood effect, you can go with cork (it?s beautiful and quite sturdy). You can install a low-flow showerhead (they use around 65 percent less water than a standard showerhead). You can also install a low-flow toilet (for similar reasons). Oh, and when it comes to your washcloths and towels, consider purchasing ones made from organic cotton or bamboo.

Upgrading rooms in general. There are also eco-friendly improvements that you can make in virtually all of the rooms in your house. You can have double-pane windows put in to better regulate your home as it relates to outdoor temperatures. You can purchase an electronic thermostat that will automatically control the temperature in your house when you?re both gone and away. You can schedule an appointment for a heat-and-air professional to come and service your central air and heat to make sure that it?s working properly. You can replace your fireplace with a pellet stove (that way you can safely and effectively burn your bio-trash as a way to stay warm). And if you really want to make a drastic change, you can either install solar panels in your roof and/or you can get a new roof altogether. Some green materials that are ideal for roofing include slate, metal, clay, asphalt and even wood shakes or shingles. All of them are comparable in price and will last for years to come.
