NJ's obesity rankings disappoint | NJ.com

A new survey was released ranking each state and the percentage of its people who were classified as obese. The good news: New Jersey ranked in the bottom ten with an obesity rate of 24.1%. Bad news: In the past 2 years, the number of obese residents in New Jersey has increased.

Maybe the blame is on the overpopulation of diners that are spread across the Garden State (gravy fries or pork roll anyone?). Or, perhaps the pizza joints found on just about every other block --the gym to food chain ratio is definitely not helping our obesity epidemic.

It?s important to implement a proper diet while New Jerseyans are still in their youth. Learning about nutrition at a young age while help with diet and wellness decisions later in life.

We all cheat. Even First Lady, Michelle Obama recently admitted to her love for a good burger and fries. But, in order to decrease our obesity levels we must emphasize the importance of exercise and maintaining a healthy diet consisting of mostly fruits, vegetables and proteins.

NJ may be famous for their late-night diners, but we don?t want to be known for a high obesity reputation. Instead of diner hopping, try hitting some of the famous parks and trails scattered throughout the state or fist-pump your way down to the Jersey Shore for an invigorating swim in the ocean or jog in the sand. We must keep moving as a community to get those obesity percentages down.
