Mobile phone operator Softbank Corp said on Tuesday it would soon begin selling smartphones with radiation detectors, tapping into concerns that atomic hotspots remain along Japan's eastern coast more than a year after the Fukushima crisis.

Parts of northeastern Japan are still off-limits due to high radiation levels after the Fukushima nuclear plant was devastated by a huge earthquake and tsunami, triggering meltdowns and spewing radiation.

Anti-nuclear sentiment is high, with advocacy groups in Tokyo and other cities calling for radiation monitoring at schools and other public facilities.

"The threat from the nuclear accident cannot be seen by the human eye and continues to be a concern for many people, especially for mothers with small children," said Softbank founder and president, Masayoshi Son, standing in front of an aerial photo of the crippled plant.

The smartphone in the company's "Pantone" series will come in eight bright colors and include customized IC chips made by Sharp Corp that measure radiation levels in microsieverts per hour.

The phone, which goes on sale this summer, can also keep track of each location a user tests for radiation levels.

Son, who emerged as an outspoken critic of nuclear power and advocate of renewable energy sources after last year's quake, told vendors and reporters that the smartphone was more portable and user-friendly than conventional Geiger counters.

Softbank, Japan's No. 3 mobile phone operator, has not set a price on the new smartphone yet, but Son told reporters after the event that it would be in an affordable price range.

Tuna carry Fukushima radiation to California

Researchers hope that similarly low levels of radiation in turtles, sea birds and sharks will allow the migration patterns of little-studied species to be tracked.

Daniel Madigan, a marine biologist at Stanford University in California, was already studying how Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) migrate across the Pacific Ocean when the Japanese tsunami put a new twist on his experiment.

The leak at the Fukushima Daiichi reactor released caesium isotopes into the Pacific, and fish can pick up the radioactive material from the water they swim in and from the food they eat.

Mysterious migrations

Juvenile tuna can take between one and four months to swim the 9000 kilometres from Japan to California. The researchers measured caesium isotopes in young tuna caught off the coast of San Diego, and found detectable levels of caesium-134 in 15 fish. The isotope could not be detected in fish that were caught before 2011.

Because caesium-134 has a half-life of two years, Madigan expects that researchers will be able to find it in the long-lived fish for some time to come. Tuna migration patterns are well known, he says, but the radiation may be useful in tracking other species such as salmon sharks (Lamna ditropis). If these sharks behave as researchers suspect they do, the migratory males would carry Fukushima radiation, but the stationary females would not.

Facebook Phone Is A Bad Idea - Business Insider

Facebook is poaching ex-Apple engineers to build a smartphone, Nick Bilton of the New York Times reports.

This is the third iteration of Facebook's smartphone plans--from hardware to software and back to hardware again.

If Facebook is serious about jumping into smartphones with both feet this time, Facebook investors should be very afraid.

Why?

Several reasons:

The move would clearly be defensive, not offensive. According to a Facebook employee quoted by Bilton, "Mark [Zuckerberg] is worried that if he doesn?t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms." Translation: Facebook is doing this because it thinks it has to, not because it wants to.
Hardware is an extraordinarily difficult, low-margin, commodity business.? The only two companies that are doing well right now in hardware are Apple and Samsung. Both have been making and selling hardware for decades. Lots of other companies that have been making and selling hardware for decades are cratering, such as Research In Motion and Nokia. Palm already cratered.
The smartphone "platform" business is already dominated by Apple and Google (Android), and there are already a whole lot of also-rans. Amazon has entered the platform game. Samsung may "fork" Android and enter the platform game. Microsoft is desperate to make its new Windows mobile product matter. RIM still has a piece. And so on. If Facebook really wants to build a brand new mobile platform, it will be starting from miles behind the leaders.
Hardware distribution is critically important, and Facebook also faces vast, entrenched competition there. How is Facebook going to get shelf space at the carriers? By offering super-cheap phones? That won't do wonders for its margins. Is Facebook going to build a network of stores? Is it going to try to circumvent carriers? Google already tried that. Didn't work.
Although Facebook might want to be a mobile platform, there's no obvious need for a Facebook phone. There are already a gazillion phones and Facebook is available on all of them as an app or via a browser. Why would anyone want a dedicated Facebook phone, especially if it didn't run all the apps that run on Apple and Android phones?
A full-fledged hardware business would likely radically reduce Facebook's profit margins. One of the advantages of Facebook's current business is that it is extraordinarily profitable. The hardware business would likely make it a lot less profitable (per dollar of revenue).
Facebook knows absolutely nothing about making, selling, or supporting hardware. Really--nothing.

That's just a start.

Perhaps Facebook doesn't really have any intention of building a full-fledged phone--perhaps it just wants to partner with someone like HTC or Samsung. But even then, all the same challenges apply.

Facebook already has an "operating system" for mobile--it's called the social graph.

So instead of building a phone, which seems like a desperate move, Facebook should partner with every operating system and carrier and hardware maker it can to try to embed this social platform within every mobile platform. And it should build great apps to float on top of these systems. One of the more popular chapters is a chapter 7 bankruptcy where your debts can be completely liquidated. However, in order to qualify for this chapter, the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) demands that individuals take the means test before filing a chapter 7 bankruptcy. The other common chapter is the chapter 13. Individuals who file for this chapter generally have a steady income and will set up a payment plan to pay off their debts. If you are looking to hire a bankruptcy attorney, it would be a good idea to hire someone you can be in direct contact with, versus a paralegal from a large law firm. Once you have selected a bankruptcy lawyer, you could then set up a meeting time to discuss your bankruptcy case and your best strategy going forward. Your attorney may also provide you with the means test. The cost for a bankruptcy attorney will also vary. Some attorneys require a flat fee, while others will let you pay them in installments. The fees will also depend on your location. In some instances, you may be able to file for free, but if you decide to file for a chapter 7, then you will most likely have to pay your attorney fees before your case is filed. In a chapter 13, your attorney fees may be included in your payment plan that you have laid out in your file. You can talk with your attorney about fees and the associated costs with filing for bankruptcy to get a better idea of what you will be paying up front. Once you have a bankruptcy attorney secured, you may then direct your creditors to his or her office. Your bankruptcy attorney will most likely handle all your creditor calls on your behalf and the automatic stay will go into effect. This automatic stay prohibits creditors from contacting you to harass you about your debts. Creditors are most likely held liable if they violate the automatic stay in which case you could be awarded for punitive damages. When your file is submitted, you may get a letter in the mail for a creditor meeting, also known as the 341 meeting. This meeting will enable the trustee of your file to ensure with you that your file is truthful and that you understand the terms of a bankruptcy. Your bankruptcy attorney will probably go over all of your listed debts with you prior to this meeting so that you can be prepared. Your answers in the meeting may be recorded, but on average, the meeting will last only approximately 10 minutes. Your trustee may then decide which assets are exempt and which are non-exempt. If there are assets listed that are considered non-exempt, these properties may be sold.? In a chapter 13 bankruptcy, you may enter a three to five year plan that involves paying back your creditors over time. While you are filing for bankruptcy, it would be a good idea to discontinue using your credit cards as well. If you use these, your creditor may utilize this against you in a lawsuit by challenging your right to a debt discharge. ?In most bankruptcy cases, your creditors will have sixty days from your meeting to challenge the discharge of your debts. If no lawsuits are filed, you may receive a discharge of your debts. In a chapter 13 bankruptcy, you can be notified anywhere from thirty to sixty days after your last payment and the trustee declares that your plan has been completed. Keep in mind that not all debts can be discharged in a bankruptcy, including student loans and specific taxes. Discharged debts usually depend on certain bankruptcy provisions and whether your creditor persuaded the judge to not discharge a particular debt. In any bankruptcy case, it would be a good idea to hire an attorney who can help you through the bankruptcy process so that you can hopefully be debt and stress free. Div., 244 Ind. 473, 477?78, 193 N.E.2d 357, 359 (1963) (good cause must be related to the employment, objective in nature, and does not encompass ?purely personal and subjective reasons which are unique to the employee?). Such would cause the narrower exception of Section 22?4?14?l(c) to swallow Section 22?4?15?1(a)?s general rule, and be inconsistent with the Act?s overall purpose to ?provide for payment of benefits to persons unemployed through no fault of their own.?
