Just by looking at the beak of your bird, you can tell whether or not it is in good health.?The state of your pet bird?s beak is important because it uses the beak in several ways, such as to eat, groom itself, handle objects, move around, and communicate.

Here are some bird beak health issues:

Scissor beak ? this condition is where your bird?s top and bottom jaws are misaligned. What causes this type of abnormality is still uncertain but most likely it is a genetic defect. In some instances it can also be caused by trauma, calcium deficiency, or an infection caused by mycobacteria. Young birds that are afflicted with scissor beak can be treated by applying pressure to the beak a few times daily to correctly align the beak.

Beak breaks ? accidents may occur, causing a break or fracture on your bird?s beak. Birds are generally active and use their beaks all the time, such as to defend themselves or move around. Bird breaks can cause pain and be uncomfortable for your bird. If you notice any beak breaks, get in touch with your vet for the best advice to treat this type of injury.

Overgrown beak ? this is one of the more common bird beak problems. It especially affects the upper beak. Some of the main causes are lack of nutrition, liver disease, and abnormalities. Treating a bird with an overgrown beak is as simple as trimming the excess beak. You can take your pet bird to an avian veterinarian to do the procedure. It is pain-free and simple. One of the ways to prevent this problem is to provide toys specifically designed to help your bird keep its beak trim. Some must-haves are mineral blocks, wooden toys, and bird accessories that have rough textures that can aid in keeping the beak trim.

Prognathism ? this is similar to an underbite, where the upper jaw rests on the lower jaw. This can be caused by a genetic defect. To treat this type of condition, you can try applying pressure to the beak. Before doing so, seek veterinarian?s advice to make sure you are doing it correctly. Another way is for your vet to equip your bird with a special type of corrective device it should wear for some time until the defect is corrected.

Other health issues you might notice about your bird?s beak, such as lesions or abnormal growths, can be a sign of underlying health problems. Inquire about these with your veterinarian so it can be properly and quickly treated.
